Mullvad is a Swedish VPN service launched in Gothenburg in March 2009 and still owned outright by its two founders, Fredrik Strömberg and Daniel Berntsson. It asks for no email address or personal details — an account is just a random 16-digit number — and charges one flat price with no tiers, trials or discounts. The client software is open source under the GPLv3.
Nord Security is a cybersecurity company whose first product, NordVPN, launched in 2012. Its portfolio also includes NordPass for passwords and NordLocker for encrypted storage. The company operates a large global VPN server network. Its apps cover desktop, mobile, and browser platforms.
Surfshark is a VPN and privacy company founded in 2018. It is known for allowing unlimited simultaneous device connections on a single subscription. The product range has expanded to include antivirus, data breach alerts, and a private search tool. Surfshark joined the Nord Security group in 2022.
AgileBits is the Canadian company behind 1Password, a password manager founded in 2005. It stores passwords, passkeys, and secure notes in an end-to-end encrypted vault. 1Password is available on every major desktop and mobile platform, plus browser extensions. It is subscription-based for individuals, families, and teams.
Bitwarden is an open-source password manager founded in 2016 by software architect Kyle Spearrin and run today by Bitwarden Inc. from Santa Barbara, California. Its free tier covers unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, which is unusual in a category where most rivals cap one or the other. The clients are GPL-licensed and the server AGPL, though some modules remain proprietary.
LastPass is a cloud-based password manager founded in 2008 by four developers, acquired by LogMeIn for 110 million dollars in 2015, and spun back out as an independent company in 2024 under private equity ownership. It runs a freemium model from Boston, Massachusetts. The company suffered a series of security incidents between 2011 and 2022, including a 2022 breach in which encrypted customer vaults were stolen.
ExpressVPN is a VPN provider founded in 2009 and registered in the British Virgin Islands. It operates servers across a wide range of countries and runs them on a RAM-only infrastructure. Its apps cover desktop, mobile, routers, and browsers. The service has undergone independent security audits.

CyberGhost is a VPN provider founded in 2011 in Romania. It offers a large server network with servers optimised for streaming and torrenting. Its apps run on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and routers. The service publishes regular transparency reports.
Cryptomator is open-source encryption software for cloud storage, created by Sebastian Stenzel and released in March 2016 by Skymatic GmbH in Bonn, Germany. It encrypts each file separately before your sync client uploads it, so Dropbox or Google Drive only ever receive ciphertext. There is no account and no key escrow, so losing the password means losing the data. Independently audited by Cure53.
Mailspring is a desktop email client for Windows, macOS and Linux, built by Ben Gotow at Foundry 376 in 2017 as a fork of the discontinued Nylas Mail. It replaced the JavaScript sync engine with a native C++ one, roughly halving memory use. The interface is GPLv3, though the sync engine itself is not open source and a free Mailspring ID is required to use the app.
