Description

Everything you need to know about CCleaner Browser
01

A CCleaner update has just left a second browser on the machine, and you already run Chrome with an ad blocker. Deciding whether to keep CCleaner Browser means knowing what it is. Piriform built this free Windows browser on Chromium, with tracker and ad blocking switched on out of the box and every protection gathered into one panel. It also ships under two other names, which is the part worth settling before you download it.

What does CCleaner Browser add over Chrome with an ad blocker?

Less than the marketing suggests. The blocking itself is work a good extension already does; what CCleaner Browser adds is consolidation: a Security and Privacy Center behind the toolbar icon, holding every protection as a labelled switch with a note on what turning it off costs you. For someone who has never opened a browser settings page, that panel is the whole argument. Recent releases track upstream Chromium closely, so security patches follow Chromium’s own release cycle. The hard limit is scope: anyone hoping for a CCleaner Browser download for a Mac or an Android phone is out of luck.

CCleaner Browser and Avast Secure Browser are the same browser

Piriform and Avast both belong to Gen Digital, and the browser they ship is one codebase wearing different logos. Install the Avast-branded build, the AVG one or this one and you get the same Chromium fork, the same Security and Privacy Center and a stack of pre-installed internal extensions, most of which never appear in the extensions list. Treat it as a convenience bundle, not a privacy upgrade: worth the download if you want those toggles waiting for you on a Windows machine, and worth skipping if you would rather not hand Gen Digital your default browser.

The shared lineage brings the commercial layer with it. Sponsored tiles sit on the new tab page beside your own shortcuts, and the browser periodically offers to adjust your settings through a prompt injected into the page you are reading. Avast was also penalised by regulators in the United States and in Europe over selling browsing data, which is why scepticism follows it.

Most people meet it by accident. The offer inside CCleaner’s own setup is two checkboxes: one installs the browser, the other makes it your default and quietly remaps which program opens your web links and HTML files.

The Security and Privacy Center holds every protection in one list

Tracker blocking, ad blocking and fingerprint masking

Anti-Tracking and the ad blocker run from first launch, in a balanced mode with a stricter one available. Balanced is the default, and it runs against exception lists the browser fetches from an update server, so ads keep loading on some large shopping sites while the panel reports itself as on and names none of those exceptions. Anti-Fingerprinting, the toggle most likely to break a site, ships switched off and has to be enabled by hand, and strict blocking sits in the same panel for anyone who wants fewer of those exceptions applied.

Phishing filters, HTTPS and extension gating

Anti-Phishing warns you before a known bad page loads, and HTTPS Encryption is on by default, forcing encrypted connections where a site supports them. Extension Guard is the toggle people notice first: anything unrecognised from the Chrome Web Store is held behind a screen listing the permissions it wants, and you approve it deliberately. Webcam Guard handles camera permissions per site.

Cleanup, passwords and the CCleaner connection

Privacy Cleaner clears history, cache and cookies from the panel instead of the usual Chromium dialog, and Stealth Mode is a private window that dumps cookies and cached files on close. A password manager stores and fills logins. If CCleaner is on the same PC the panel can launch it, but the browser does not include the cleaning tool.

CCleaner Browser versus Brave, Opera and Avast Secure Browser

Brave is the closest match on intent and stronger on reach: blocking is on by default there too, the code is open source so the filter behaviour can be inspected, and it runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. Its catch is the crypto and rewards layer, which has to be turned off. Opera trades built-in blocking for extras, bundling a free proxy service and a messenger sidebar, and its ad blocker is a setup choice rather than a default. Avast Secure Browser is the same browser from the same owner. Choose CCleaner Browser if you are on Windows and want protection you never configure; choose Brave if you want the same defaults on a phone or would rather read the blocking rules yourself.

CCleaner Browser’s memory savings come from suspending idle tabs

Background tabs get suspended based on how much memory the machine has left, which is why a long session with twenty tabs open costs less here than in stock Chromium. Piriform claims it can cut processor and memory use by as much as half, and that battery tweaks add roughly a fifth more laptop runtime; those are vendor figures, not independent measurements, and resuming a suspended tab means reloading it. The internal extensions also run whether you use their features or not.

CCleaner Browser is worth installing for one specific kind of user

If you run Windows, want ads and trackers blocked the moment the browser opens, and have no appetite for judging extensions yourself, CCleaner Browser earns the download. Anyone unwilling to give an advertising-funded company their default browser is better served by Brave. Spend the first minute after installing in the Security and Privacy Center.

Better than an unconfigured Chrome install, weaker than a browser from a company with no advertising business. CCleaner Browser blocks trackers and ads out of the box, but it also carries sponsored placements and a default blocking mode with unlisted exceptions. Turn on Anti-Fingerprinting and strict blocking and it becomes a reasonable everyday choice.

Pros

  • Ad and tracker blocking are active before you touch a setting
  • Every protection sits in one panel with a plain explanation beside each switch
  • Chromium underneath means Chrome extensions, bookmark import and a familiar interface
  • Idle tabs are suspended automatically, which helps on machines short on memory
  • Free, with no protection locked behind a subscription

Cons

  • Windows only, with no Mac, Android or iOS build
  • Sponsored tiles on the new tab page and recurring prompts to change settings
  • Arrives pre-checked inside CCleaner's installer, which is how most people end up with it
  • The default blocking mode applies exceptions the interface never shows you
