VeraCrypt is free disk encryption software first released in June 2013 by Mounir Idrassi of the French firm IDRIX, built as a fork of TrueCrypt 7.1a after that project was abruptly abandoned. It strengthens the key derivation TrueCrypt used, which makes unlocking a volume slower but far harder to brute-force. Licensed under Apache 2.0 and the original TrueCrypt licence.
