Description

Everything you need to know about Lightshot
01

Someone on the other end of a support ticket needs to see the error box on your screen, and they need it in the next thirty seconds. That is the job Lightshot was built for: a free screenshot tool for Windows and Mac that turns a dragged rectangle into an annotated image or a shareable link in the time it takes to open Paint. What decides whether you should download it is what happens when you press the upload key instead of the save key.

The hotkey greys out the screen, you drag a rectangle, and a small toolbar appears along the edge of the selection: pen, line, arrow, box, marker, text, colour picker, undo. Nothing loads first, and there is no account anywhere in the flow. From there you save to disk, copy to the clipboard, print, run a reverse image search on the selection, or push the capture to prnt.sc and get back a short link to paste into a chat.

It is free in the plain sense of the word: one version with nothing withheld and no upgrade being sold to you. The catch riding along with the speed is the editor. There is no blur and no pixelate, so anything sensitive has to be covered with a filled box before you share it, or left out of the selection.

The upload key publishes your screenshot to an open page

Save and upload sit one keystroke apart and do very different things. Save keeps the image on your machine. Upload sends it to prnt.sc and returns a short link carrying no password, no expiry, and no access control. Anyone who opens that link sees the image, and the service has never pretended otherwise: uploads are public by design. The short codes ran in sequence for years, which let scrapers walk through strangers’ captures in bulk, and everything posted then is still sitting there.

That does not make Lightshot a bad program. It makes the upload key a publishing button. Treat it that way, keep the save key as your default, and Lightshot is still worth installing for the speed alone. Paste a billing screen into it out of habit and you cannot pull it back cleanly, because the app offers no way to browse or delete past uploads.

What can the Lightshot editor do, and where does it stop?

Annotation covers the basics and stops there: freehand pen, lines, arrows, boxes, a marker, and text with a colour choice. Line thickness and font size sit on the scroll wheel with no control to show for them, which is the kind of thing you learn by accident. The selection handles are the underrated part, since a rectangle can be nudged and resized after you draw it instead of forcing a restart.

What it does not do is the longer list. No screen recording. No scrolling capture for a full web page. No cloud library management. The Mac build has fallen well behind the Windows one and carries a thinner options screen, and the Firefox add-on only captures inside the browser window because the extension platform gives it nothing outside. There is no native Linux build; Skillbrains points Linux users at Wine. Development has been quiet for a long stretch on every platform, so treat the program as finished rather than improving.

The common surprise comes on a fresh Windows machine, where Lightshot looks broken straight after installation. Windows claims the Print Screen key for its own snipping tool by default, so the hotkey opens the wrong overlay, and nothing in the Lightshot documentation mentions it. Handing the key back takes three steps:

  1. Open Windows Settings, go to Accessibility and then Keyboard, and turn off the option that lets the Print screen key open screen capture.
  2. Right-click the Lightshot tray icon, open Options, and confirm the general hotkey, or assign a spare key such as Insert if something else has claimed it.
  3. In the same window, tick the entry that starts Lightshot with Windows, then reboot once so the hotkey registers.

Lightshot versus ShareX, Greenshot, and the Snipping Tool

ShareX is the obvious upgrade and the obvious overkill. It records video, captures scrolling pages, runs text recognition, and lets you choose where uploads go, including your own server, which is the control Lightshot withholds. The price is a settings tree deep enough to be a hobby. Greenshot is the closer match in spirit: free, tiny, Windows-focused, with a similar capture-and-annotate loop, but it saves to your own destinations instead of one public host. The Windows Snipping Tool has quietly become good, with delayed capture, markup, and a recorder, though sharing still means saving a file and attaching it.

If your screenshots reach a chat window seconds after you take them and none of them are sensitive, Lightshot beats all three on speed. If you need recording, scrolling capture, or any say in where an upload lands, ShareX earns its setup time, and Greenshot fits anyone wanting the same quick loop with nothing leaving the machine.

The speed comes from how little Lightshot loads

Almost nothing runs until the hotkey is pressed. The program lives in the system tray, holds a small memory footprint while waiting, and installs in seconds. Capture to clipboard is effectively instant, and the only pause comes from the upload, which depends on your connection rather than the app. On an older laptop the gap against a heavier capture suite is felt, not theoretical.

Lightshot is the right pick for throwaway screenshots

Lightshot suits anyone firing captures into chats and tickets all day who wants the gap between key press and finished image as close to zero as it gets. Anyone capturing account screens or client work should stay on the save key or pick a tool that keeps uploads private. If speed is the priority and you are happy treating upload as public, download Lightshot for Windows and let the save shortcut become muscle memory.

  • Free with no paid tier, no watermark, and no account requirement
  • Capture, mark up, and copy or save without waiting for an editor to open
  • Reverse image search runs on the selected region from the capture toolbar
  • Small install that sits in the tray and uses little memory while idle

Cons

  • Uploaded captures land on an open page that anyone holding the link can read
  • The editor has no blur or pixelate tool for covering sensitive detail
  • Development has stalled, and the Mac build lags noticeably behind the Windows one
  • Cannot record video or capture a scrolling page, and past uploads cannot be managed from the app
