Is Viber free? For messages and calls between Viber users, yes, and the honest reason to choose it is who is already there. Viber dominates in Eastern Europe, Greece, the Balkans, and parts of Asia but is thin elsewhere, so it rarely replaces your main messenger unless your circle lives on it. Free calling has a geographic catch too: some countries restrict internet calling, the UAE does not license Viber’s free calls, and Russia blocked the app outright. Recent updates keep expanding Communities.
Which Viber chats are encrypted, and which are not?
One-to-one chats, groups, and one-to-one voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, with nothing to switch on. Communities, channels, bot chats, group calls, and Viber Out calls are not, because Communities and channels show their full history to anyone who joins. Disappearing messages delete themselves on a timer for everyone in the chat. Hidden Chats lock chosen conversations behind a PIN. Hidden-number chats let Community members talk without exposing phone numbers. Trusted contacts verification confirms two people’s keys match. What rivals lack is Viber Out: paid calls to landlines and mobile numbers outside Viber, from the same contact list.
Viber for Windows, Mac, and Linux runs on your phone’s account
The desktop app is a companion, not a separate account: to download Viber for Windows or Mac and use it, the account must already be active on a phone. Linking takes three steps:
Some chat features never reach desktop, and one long-running user report describes desktop chat lists going nearly empty after a Mac woke from sleep while the phone kept every conversation intact. Treat the desktop window as a mirror, never as the archive.
What stays free in Viber and what the paid extras add
Messaging, voice and video calls, groups, and Communities cost nothing. Ads appear in parts of the free app. Viber Out is credit or a calling plan for reaching ordinary phone numbers. Viber Plus, where available, is a monthly subscription that removes ads and adds invisible mode, voice-message transcription, and unlimited stickers.
Viber versus WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal
WhatsApp has the bigger worldwide network and the same default encryption for personal chats, so outside Viber’s home regions it is easier. Telegram leans on public channels, but regular chats are not end-to-end encrypted unless you start a secret chat. Signal is run by a non-profit, collects the least data, and shows no ads, but cannot call regular numbers.
| Messenger | Owner | Default E2E in personal chats | Calls to regular phone numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viber | Rakuten | Yes | Yes, through Viber Out |
| Meta | Yes | No | |
| Telegram | Telegram | No, secret chats only | No |
| Signal | Signal Foundation | Yes | No |
Pick Viber when your contacts use it or you call landlines abroad; pick Signal when privacy comes first.
Call quality and desktop sync in daily use
Call quality depends on the network far more than on the device. On Android, aggressive battery savers can delay notifications until the app is opened. The desktop client is only as complete as its last sync with the phone.
Viber earns its place when your circle already uses it
Install Viber if the people you talk to are already on it: it is a legitimate, encrypted messenger with a useful desktop companion and cheap calls to real phone numbers, but treat your phone as the home of your account and set up backups before you ever switch phones. If nobody you know uses it, WhatsApp or Signal will serve you better; if they do, Viber is worth the download.
