Rakuten was founded in Tokyo on 7 February 1997 by Hiroshi Mikitani, originally as MDM, Inc., and launched the Rakuten Ichiba marketplace three months later. It has since grown into a group spanning e-commerce, banking, mobile networks and messaging, owning Viber among others. The company made English its official internal language in 2012.
