Description

Everything you need to know about Greenshot
01

Documenting one bug takes a dozen screenshots, each cropped, arrowed, and stripped of anything that should not leave the building. Greenshot is a free, open-source screenshot tool for Windows built for exactly that loop: one key, drag a region, the editor opens, done. What it refuses to do is the part worth settling before you download it.

Greenshot’s capture loop stays on your machine

Nothing Greenshot captures leaves the computer unless you deliberately send it somewhere. No account, no sign-in, no history page, no upload humming in the background. The Windows build is open source, kept up by the small Greenshot Development Team, with no paid tier holding anything back. That default matters: Lightshot’s quick-share button drops your image on a public link, which is the wrong behavior for an invoice, an error dialog full of internal hostnames, or a support ticket. Greenshot’s destination is its own editor. The project also came back to life after a long quiet stretch, and recent updates brought editor zoom and better scaling on high-resolution displays.

What does Greenshot capture, and where does it send the result?

The capture modes are the ordinary three: a dragged region, a single window, or the whole screen, each on a reassignable hotkey. A fourth repeats your last region, which is the one people lean on when documenting a sequence of steps inside one dialog.

Whatever you grab lands in the editor. Arrows, boxes, freehand lines, text callouts, cropping, and a highlighter cover the annotation side. The reason to download it, though, is the obfuscation tool: select an area and blur or pixelate it in two clicks, which is how account numbers, license keys, and customer names get out of a screenshot before it reaches a ticket. One caveat: pixelation is a scramble, not a deletion, and recovery attempts on light pixelation have succeeded before. For anything genuinely sensitive, draw a filled rectangle over it instead.

Output is where the program earns its keep. A capture can go to a file with an auto-generated name, to the clipboard, to a printer, into a new email, or into a Microsoft Office document, and a plugin layer adds further destinations. Two things it will not do, and no setting changes them: there is no screen recording and no GIF capture. The scrolling web page capture on Greenshot’s own feature list is real, but it is wired to Internet Explorer, so in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox that mode never produces the full-page image the wording implies. People install it for long web captures and go straight back to searching, which is the most useful thing to know before you download it.

Why the Print Screen key may not open Greenshot

Current Windows 11 builds assign the Print Screen key to the built-in Snipping Tool, and Windows wins that fight. A fresh install looks broken for this reason alone: the tray icon is there, the program is running, the key does something else. OneDrive and Dropbox both offer to catch screenshots too.

  1. Open Settings, go to Accessibility, then Keyboard, and turn off the option that uses the Print Screen key to open screen capture.
  2. Check OneDrive and Dropbox for their own screenshot options and switch off whichever is enabled.
  3. Right-click the Greenshot tray icon, exit, start it again, then set the key under Preferences and Hotkeys.

Order matters, because Greenshot claims hotkeys only at startup: change the Windows setting while it runs and nothing happens until you restart it.

Greenshot against ShareX, Lightshot, and the Snipping Tool

ShareX is the honest answer for anyone who wants more: recording, GIFs, working scrolling capture, OCR, and a task system that chains actions, all free. The cost is a settings screen that takes an evening to learn, and most people documenting a bug do not want an evening. Lightshot sits at the other end, quicker to learn but thinner in the editor and built around public share links. The Snipping Tool has closed much of the gap and now records video, though its editor stops at a pen and cropping, with no redaction.

Pick Greenshot if annotated, redacted screenshots are the whole task. Pick ShareX if you also need video or full-page web captures, and accept the setup time.

Resource use and how quickly the editor opens

The program sits in the system tray doing nothing until a hotkey fires, and its idle footprint never turns up in a list of things slowing a machine down. Press the key and the region selector appears without a visible delay. There is no background scanning, no sync service, and no upload queue, so nothing runs between captures.

Greenshot earns its place on a screenshot-heavy machine

Greenshot suits anyone on Windows taking annotated screenshots all day who needs sensitive parts covered before they reach a ticket or an email. Anyone needing recordings, GIFs, or real full-page web captures should skip it and take the longer setup of ShareX. If still images with fast markup are the daily job, download it and it will stay out of your way.

Not in a modern browser. The scrolling capture is built on Internet Explorer, so Chrome, Edge, and Firefox return only the visible area. Use the browser's own full-page screenshot instead.

Pros

  • Free and open source on Windows, with no account and nothing uploaded unless you set that up
  • Capture to annotated result is fast enough to repeat dozens of times a day
  • Blur, pixelate, and filled shapes for covering what cannot leave the machine
  • Sends captures to a file, the clipboard, a printer, an email, or an Office document
  • Small tray footprint, short learning curve

Cons

  • No screen recording and no GIF capture
  • The advertised full-page web capture only works through Internet Explorer
  • The Mac release is a separate paid app, not the same open-source program

Troubleshooting Guide for Greenshot
03
It launches with Windows and lives in the tray, so it usually is running; open it from the tray icon. If the icon is missing, end every Greenshot process in Task Manager and start it once. Remove the duplicate startup entry if the message returns at each boot.
