Yahoo began in January 1994 as a hand-built web directory by Stanford students Jerry Yang and David Filo, and was incorporated in March 1995. After Verizon bought its core business in 2017, the company was sold again in September 2021 and is now 90 percent owned by the private equity firm Apollo Global Management, with Verizon holding the rest. Yahoo Japan is a separate company and is not owned by Yahoo Inc.
