Description

Everything you need to know about Yandex Browser
01

Most people meet Yandex Browser one of two ways: a friend in Russia or Turkey swears by its video translation, or it turned up on a Windows PC after installing something unrelated. This is a free Chromium-based web browser from Yandex, the Russian search company, with more built-in tools than most web browsers on the same engine. Deciding whether to download it comes down to a question the marketing never asks: are the extra tools worth using software that answers to Russian law?

Yandex Browser trades jurisdiction for tools nobody else builds in

The tools are worth it for one kind of user and clearly not for another. The software itself is legitimate: a mainstream browser with a large share of the Russian market and a Protect layer that does block phishing pages and scan downloaded files. What keeps the “is it a virus” question alive is distribution: for years, installers for unrelated freeware, including a well-known driver-pack tool, shipped Yandex Browser as a pre-ticked extra. The complaints behind those searches trace to how it arrived on the PC, not to what the browser does. The real caveat is jurisdiction. Yandex Browser is a legitimate, technically strong Chromium browser whose translation and dubbing tools are real and unmatched, and the honest caveat is where your data lives rather than malware, so it is the right pick for multilingual users who accept that and the wrong pick for anyone whose first requirement is privacy from state-level jurisdiction.

Which Yandex Browser features justify the switch?

Yandex Browser runs on Chromium and the Blink engine. What Yandex adds on top falls into three groups, and the first is the one nobody else matches.

Page and video translation with voice dubbing

Whole-page translation is built in, covers languages Western browsers treat as an afterthought, and can translate text inside images. The signature feature is video translation: a neural network produces subtitles or a dubbed voice track for videos on YouTube and several other platforms, keeping the speaker’s voice character when the source is English. One detail the listings gloss over: the dubbed audio comes out in Russian, so an English speaker gets the page translation and subtitles while the voice track serves Russian-speaking viewers.

Switching it on means starting the video, then clicking the translate icon on the media panel above the player and picking voice dubbing or subtitles.

Alice AI sits in the same toolbar: it answers questions in a side panel, summarises a long article or video, and checks text you are typing. Recent releases added a seller-reliability warning in the address bar.

The Protect security layer

Protect is a bundle of separate defenses:

  • Phishing warnings driven by a neural network trained on fraudulent pages
  • Antivirus-backed scanning of downloaded files
  • Secure Wi-Fi, which encrypts traffic to plain HTTP sites on open networks
  • Protection for saved passwords and card numbers
  • DNSCrypt for DNS lookups, off until you enable it

Ad blocking is on by default, and on Android the browser works alongside separate blocker apps such as AdGuard.

Feed, Tableau, sync, and extensions

The new-tab page is the Tableau, a grid of site tiles with the Dzen content feed underneath; the feed is the first thing most people switch off. A Yandex account syncs tabs, bookmarks, and passwords across devices. Extensions come from the Chrome Web Store and the Opera add-ons catalog, and on Android the browser installs desktop extensions, which Chrome for Android still refuses to do.

What Yandex Browser collects and which law it answers to

The privacy policy covers device data, usage patterns, search history, location, and partner data, and independent terms-of-service reviewers rate it poorly. Some of that is standard for any browser tied to a search account; the difference is the legal environment. Russian law allows authorities to request user data from domestic companies, and Yandex’s Russian business now sits under Russian ownership after its former Dutch parent sold it. The code is closed, so nobody outside can audit what the browser sends home. A signed-in account’s history sits with a company that cannot refuse a lawful domestic request, and Incognito Mode limits local traces, not server-side data.

Yandex Browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iPhone

Windows is the flagship, and downloading Yandex Browser for Windows gets the full feature set plus a corporate MSI variant. macOS gets separate Intel and Apple silicon builds, and Linux gets official DEB and RPM packages with a signed update repository; older references to a “Linux beta” are stale. On iPhone the listing reads “Yandex Browser with Alice AI” and Apple’s rules put it on the WebKit engine, so extension support does not carry over.

Yandex Browser versus Opera, Chrome, and Brave

All four share the Chromium engine, so the differences are what each bolts on and who stands behind it. Opera is the closest match: a free VPN, an ad blocker, and its Aria assistant, lacking only Yandex’s translation depth and video dubbing, with Chinese ownership raising a milder version of the same jurisdiction question. Google Chrome is the cleanest Chromium with good page translation but no ad blocker and no VPN. Brave blocks trackers and ads by default on a privacy-first model neither rival can claim, but its translation is basic.

Pick Yandex Browser if you read or watch content across languages and want the tools built in. Pick Opera for a similar feature load plus a real VPN and less baggage. Pick Brave if privacy comes first.

Startup speed, memory, and the missing Turbo mode

Rendering is Chromium rendering; pages load and scroll as they do in Chrome or Edge. The only speed figures in circulation are the cold-start and search-response numbers Yandex cites from an independent Russian study, so treat the startup claim as the vendor’s, not a measured result. It is not a light build, either: the feed, Alice, the ad blocker, and Protect all run alongside the core, and on an older laptop the memory footprint sits above bare Chromium. Hardware video decoding has needed driver tweaks on some Linux setups. And the Turbo mode that older reviews still praise is gone. Yandex switched it off because it only compressed plain HTTP traffic, and almost no site still serves that.

The right users for Yandex Browser, and the wrong ones

Yandex Browser earns a place on the machine of anyone who works across languages: the page translation handles what rivals skip, and the video dubbing has no equivalent. It is the wrong choice for anyone who wants their browsing history out of reach of Russian jurisdiction, and no settings tweak changes that. If the first group describes you, it is worth the download; if you hesitated at the jurisdiction question, install Brave or Opera instead.

Yandex Browser is developed by Yandex, the Russian search company behind Alice AI and Yandex Maps. Its Russian business now operates under Russian ownership after the former Dutch parent divested it, which places the browser under Russian data-request rules.

Pros

  • Live video translation with voice dubbing that no other mainstream browser builds in
  • Full-page neural translation, including text inside images, with strong coverage of less common languages
  • Chrome Web Store and Opera add-on extensions install unchanged, including on Android
  • Protect blocks phishing pages, scans downloads, and encrypts open Wi-Fi traffic
  • Free on every platform, with official Linux packages and an update repository

Cons

  • The developer operates under Russian law and its data policy rates poorly with independent reviewers
  • Closed source, so data handling cannot be independently audited
  • Voice dubbing targets Russian, and the default feed pushes content most Western users will turn off

Yandex Browser: Trust & Privacy Summary

Yandex Browser is a closed-source browser that is free to use for personal purposes, and no account is required for normal browsing since syncing is optional. It is actively maintained. Its license agreement describes collecting usage and technical data such as visited sites, downloads and installed software, synced content including passwords, bookmarks and history, location data including IP address, Wi-Fi network data and geolocation on mobile, and device identifiers such as software and SIM-card information, which puts it at a standard level of data collection. Yandex's privacy policy states that personal information may be transferred to third parties outside the Yandex group, including advertising partners. The password vault is stored encrypted, and an encrypted copy is sent to Yandex servers when syncing is used. A no-logs policy does not apply to this type of software.
