Yandex began in 1997 as Russia's first major search engine, founded by Arkady Volozh, Arkady Borkovsky and Ilya Segalovich, and launched its Chromium-based browser in 2012. Ownership changed in July 2024: the Dutch parent sold all Russian assets to a consortium of Russian investors and renamed itself Nebius Group. The Yandex brand and browser are now held by a Russian entity and fall under Russian jurisdiction.
