Twenty-four months of updates, paid for with one restart. That is the trade Microsoft put on the table on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, when it released Windows 11 version 26H2 to the Release Preview Channel as build 26300.9278 under KB5120998. Release Preview is the last stop before an update rolls out to everyone, and Microsoft says general availability arrives later this calendar year.
The restart is the whole installation. 26H2 ships as an enablement package, the same mechanism Microsoft used for 25H2: versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all run on one shared servicing branch, so the new version is a switch that activates code already sitting on your machine. Most of the features have trickled onto 24H2 and 25H2 PCs through the regular monthly updates, and 26H2 launches at feature parity with 25H2. The feature list itself has not moved since our earlier look at what 26H2 brings and when it arrives.
The support clock is the real story. Installing 26H2 resets it: 24 months of updates for Home and Pro editions, 36 for Enterprise and Education. That matters because Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education hold on until October 12, 2027. Anyone still on 24H2 has a hard reason to move this fall.
Business machines get a little more out of the switch. On commercial devices, 26H2 turns on several features that shipped earlier but stayed off by default, including Windows settings backup, app actions on the taskbar, and a set of File Explorer changes. IT admins can begin validating the build now through Windows Update client policies or WSUS.
One group is left out for now: PCs running Windows 11 26H1, the separate branch built for new Arm hardware such as Snapdragon X2 systems. Those machines cannot jump straight to 26H2 and will get their upgrade path in a future release, per Microsoft.
Insiders enrolled in the Release Preview Channel can install 26H2 today by turning on the option in Windows Update to get the latest updates as soon as they are available, provided the PC meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements. ISO files will follow on the Windows Insider download page in the near term, according to Microsoft.
Nothing urgent, one date to circle
If you are not an Insider, there is nothing to do today. When 26H2 shows up in Windows Update this fall, take it: the core OS is unchanged from 25H2, so there is no compatibility break to wait out. If you are on 24H2 Home or Pro, put the October 13 cutoff on your calendar and do not ride the old version past it. We will cover the rollout as it starts in our Operating Systems section.
The next date that matters is the general availability announcement. Microsoft has not named it, but Windows Central’s Zac Bowden expects the rollout to begin within weeks, in Microsoft’s usual late September to October window.
