Everything you need to know about Google Duo
01

People still type the old name into search, and the app that answers to Google Duo looks nothing like the one they remember. Google built Duo as a simple one-tap video calling app for Android and iPhone, then folded it into Google Meet, and the original Duo calling system has now been switched off for good. What you download today is the same app under the Meet name, with new tools added and several familiar ones removed. The real question is whether it still earns a spot on your phone, or whether WhatsApp or FaceTime now does the job better.

Google Duo now lives inside the Google Meet app

Google Duo did not disappear; it was renamed. Google moved Duo’s video calling into the Meet brand, and the Duo app on phones became Google Meet. For a while the old Duo system ran alongside the new one as “legacy” calling. After a delayed shutdown, Google removed that legacy mode entirely, along with the old call history and its settings menu.

The practical result is good news for most people. Personal one-to-one and group video calls still cost nothing, still start from the Android dialer and Google Messages, and still reach friends on iPhone. Duo’s best trick survives: on most Android phones, a video call starts straight from a contact card with no separate app to open first. Old Duo contacts did not need re-adding either, since anyone who updated the app is still reachable through the same number or Google account.

The cost is Duo’s personality. The playful extras are gone, and anyone who never exported their legacy call log before the cutoff has lost it.

What changed for Google Duo calls after the Meet merger?

Meet calling added tools that Duo either never had or kept limited. Live captions show what the other person is saying in real time, which helps on a noisy street. In-call chat lets you paste an address mid-call. Screen sharing works on mobile, and stackable effects let you layer a background blur with a filter instead of picking just one. Calls are cloud-encrypted by default, and calls between two personal accounts can switch on Additional encryption for full end-to-end protection.

Google also removed several signature Duo features, and none of them came back:

  • Knock Knock, the live video preview of a caller before you answer
  • Family mode, with doodles and masks for calls with children
  • Moments, the in-call photo captures
  • Low light mode and Data saving mode

One change catches returning Duo users off guard. Meet calling makes you reachable by your Google account email by default, not only by your phone number. That means anyone who knows your Gmail address can ring you. Limiting it takes a few taps:

  1. Open the Meet app and tap the menu.
  2. Go to Settings, then General.
  3. Turn on “Only contacts can call me.”

After that, only people saved in your Google Contacts can get through. Group calls also behave differently: you can no longer add or remove someone in the middle of a call, so a new person means starting a fresh group call. On Nest smart displays, incoming group calls work, but you cannot start a group call from a Nest speaker or display.

Google Duo calling versus WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom

Three video calling apps compete for the same spot on the home screen, and each wins on a different point. WhatsApp encrypts every call end to end by default and has proper desktop apps, but it ties your identity to a phone number and needs every contact to install it. FaceTime is the smoothest option inside the Apple ecosystem with default end-to-end encryption, yet Android and Windows users can only join through a browser link, never start a call. Zoom suits larger, scheduled group sessions with full desktop clients, but adds friction to a quick family call.

Pick Google Duo, now Meet, when your family is mostly on Android and you want calls that start from the phone’s own contact list without a phone-number-based messenger. Pick WhatsApp if your contacts already live there and default end-to-end encryption matters most, and stick with FaceTime if everyone in the conversation owns an iPhone.

Call quality on weak connections without Duo’s old modes

Duo earned its reputation by holding a call together on poor mobile data, and Meet calling keeps that instinct: video quality steps down when the connection weakens, so the picture blurs before the call drops. What the merger took away is control. Data saving mode, which capped how much mobile data a call used, is no longer there, and neither is Low light mode, which brightened dim rooms. With no data cap left to switch on, long calls on a limited mobile plan are better saved for Wi-Fi.

Who should still install Google Duo as Meet

Google Duo lives on inside Google Meet as a solid free calling app for Android-heavy families, but Duo loyalists who valued Knock Knock or Family mode should know those features are gone for good. If your contacts already sit on WhatsApp or are all on iPhone, you can skip it without missing much. For everyone else who wants video calls that start from the dialer, Google Meet is worth the download, with the “Only contacts can call me” switch turned on from day one.

No. Google Duo is now the Google Meet app, and the old Duo calling system is shut down.

Common Problems and Fixes

Troubleshooting Guide for Google Duo
03
Update the Meet app to its latest version, since older builds cannot receive the new calls. Then open the phone's app settings, allow notifications for Meet, and exclude it from battery optimization so the system does not silence it in the background.

Google Meet is Google's video conferencing app for desktop and phones. On a PC it installs as a light web app, and free group calls stop at the hour.
WhatsApp is the messaging app most of your contacts already use. The phone install is an easy call, while the Windows desktop app is where the real tradeoff sits.
Messenger is Meta's free messaging app for Android and iPhone, with encrypted personal chats. The catch is that no desktop app comes with it anymore.
FaceTime is Apple's free video calling app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, encrypted end to end. The catch is who can call you back, and who can only join.
