What you actually get: real-time protection, virus and file scanning, and automatic signature updates, with Safe Money, Parental Control, and Privacy Protection visible but locked behind a paid upgrade.
The catch: the US Department of Commerce banned the sale of Kaspersky products in the United States starting mid-2024, and updates for existing US installs stopped that September. Outside the US, including across the EU, UK, and most of Asia, Latin America, and Africa, Kaspersky continues to sell and update normally. From there, the Softoto score follows the strength of the underlying detection engine first, what the labs actually measured, and whether the free tier runs the same engine as the paid tiers or a stripped-down version of it. Feature gaps, ownership history, and availability restrictions are real, and every catch above says so plainly. But a verified, strong engine is what keeps a pick near the top of this list even when its catch is serious. The score tells you how good the engine is. The catch tells you whether that catch is a dealbreaker for you specifically, and that second call is yours to make, not ours.
